This was my first time to The Flying Tiger, and I was totally impressed. I felt comfortable the moment I walked into the narrow, dimly lit, loud restaurant. I know those don't sound like ideal surroundings, but trust me, it's perfect. Stylish and snug.
Our server was charmingly attentive, apologizing for a wait that hadn't bothered us at all. We had a good view of the open kitchen, and I could see that the chef gave just as much care and attention to the food. And it showed.
I started with the mussels and chili fry bread. It was almost entree-size, and I loved it, especially the bread. My boyfriend Kelly had "spicy seared rare tuna" that came with a cold soba salad. I was jealous and helped him liberally. It was great.
We had the same entree, pulled duck confit crepes. It was a beautifully presented plate with about five small pancakes, a deep dish of the pulled duck, a cold and crisp cucumber and jicama salad, and an impressive pile of fresh herbs- mint, cilantro, 2 kinds of basil, and 2 Vietnamese herbs I didn't know. Since we had to assemble the crepes ourselves, I felt very clever when I called it "Asian fajitas." It was a very generous portion, and I enjoyed it immensely.
Dessert for me was a steamed cassava cake with condensed milk. I thought it was good, but not really up my alley. Kelly had tempura-fried bananas with chocolate sauce, which he liked quite a bit.
This was fantastic value for a $25 Dine Out meal, and I will definitely visit this place again.
