Your Vancouver Dine-Out Experience Contest (2008)
Raincity Grill
Posted by lotuscat 2008-1-24 Views:
My second time at Raincity Grill was practically revelatory. My boyfriend Kelly completely agreed, going so far as to say that he felt the others in the restaurant were privileged to see him eat that meal. Yeah. We're fans.

The service is exquisite, and even the bread and butter is a cut above. I started with duck consomme that smelled amazing, and came with a few small wontons that I would gladly have eaten a bowl of. Kelly had a trio of tartare that I can't comment on, my secret foodie shame being that I don't enjoy raw fish so much.

The best part of the whole meal were the mains. Kelly's main, to be specific. He chose well. This was his plate: seared chicken, mushroom ragout, shockingly savoury celeriac, and the butteriest, smoothest potato puree I've ever seen. Everything on that plate was the best, and he felt it was pretty much the best entree he'd ever had. EVER. What the heck? I believe it.

I had considered ordering that plate, but in a fit of trying to be healthy, I went for the salmon, which I don't even love. None the less, it was tasty and cooked perfectly. I didn't so much dig the leeks on the side, but the braised parsnip was novel and good.

We argued over whose dessert was better. Mine surely was. It was rich chocolate cake on a plate with dabs of chocolate mousse, something like chocolate wafers, and something hazelnutty. Okay, I don't know the names, but it looked fantastic and tasted even better. It was all these different textures and it was so interesting. Kelly had a simple honey pot au creme with biscotti, and he adored it.

This was one meal that will be tough to top.
